“I like to think of the world’s great spiritual traditions, and even traditions within those traditions, as pathways that criss-cross on their way up the same mountain. Some are gradual, some steep. Some safe, some extreme enough to be downright dangerous.”
Nature of the Transcendent
Our neighbor who appears to be following a completely different tradition may in fact be worshipping or venerating the exact same citizens of Heaven that we are, no matter how different the personae under which they appear might look to us.
“A Tantric monk drinks wine by day and chases women by night. A woman with no ecclesiastical rank barges into the palace to tell the Pope where he should really be living. A frustrated celibate receives a proposal of marriage from a Goddess. With these crazy fuckers, searching for the Transcendent is revealed as the extreme sport that it truly is.”
“Of all the crazy fuckers we are likely to talk about, Drukpa Kunley is likely to merit the title of craziest. Hands down, at least if we are to take the record of his exploits at face value.”
“If someone were to propose a movie based on the life of a young woman of the late Middle Ages who was functionally illiterate, yet managed to become a counselor to princes and an advisor to two Popes, you could be easily forgiven for dismissing the idea as simply too fantastic to be believable.”
